Just Over A Month Until China’s Moon Festival

Moon Festival

China is renowned for its fascinating traditions and sensational celebrations. Peppered with vibrancy and generous rituals, China is home to some of the most spectacular celebrations seen in the world. There is no better evidence for this than China’s Moon Festival.

Also known as “Mid-Autumn” Festival, it falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese Lunar calendar – which equivalates to late September in the Gregorian calendar. It is around this time that the moon is believed to be at its brightest and fullest.

Famed throughout East and South-East Asia, the Moon Festival dates back 3,000 years – when its objective was to welcome a bountiful harvest that season. As the holiday evolved, the focus shifted to gathering of loved ones and thanksgiving.

Sinowei’s Sales Executive, Abby Xie, revealed how she commemorates this enchanting festivity.

“It is known to all that on this day, the moon will turn into full round. ‘Round’ means ‘reunion’ in China. Therefore, all the family members will come back home to reunite with family.”

“There are several ways to celebrate the festival. The first and most common way is that family will gather round a table to enjoy the glorious full moon and eat moon cake.”

“The second tradition is only popular in Chaoshan area. In my hometown – Teochew, our parents and grandparents (especially our grandma) will be busy preparing to worship the god of the moon, who is called ‘Moon Lady’. There are a lot of tributes such as moon cake and fruits.”

The element of light is at the centre of this season also. Lanterns and bonfires are displayed as symbolic beacons to light people’s path to prosperity and good fortune.

“It is a very spectacular scene when the fire goes up. People will also sing some folk songs together to elevate the atmosphere. The activity ends when the fire is gone.”
